Job Description
A well-funded, cloud-native SaaS platform operating in the energy and utilities sector is going through a significant transformation. New leadership is in place, the structure has been streamlined, and now the focus shifts to rebuilding the engineering organisation — culture, performance, and delivery.
This is a critical interim hire at a pivotal moment. The platform handles real-time billing at scale for some of the UK's largest energy suppliers — technically demanding, commercially high-stakes, and moving fast.
The rol
eThis role will suit someone who has come up through a data or analytics background and moved into engineering leadership — you think in metrics, you build for observability, and you know how to use data to drive cultural as well as technical change. The org needs someone who can make performance visible and credible, and that starts with how you're wired
.They need a hands-on engineering leader with a strong data instinct — someone who measures before they act, makes performance visible before they improve it, and builds the kind of engineering culture where decisions are grounded in evidence, not instinct alone. You can hold your own in a technical conversation, but your edge is in using data to diagnose, prioritise, and prove progress
.You won't be managing layers of managers. You'll be close to the engineers, close to the work, and close to the numbers that tell the real story
.
What you'll be doi

- veUsing data to diagnose where delivery is breaking down: cycle time, deployment frequency, incident patterns, team throughp
- utInstilling data-driven ways of working across the teams — visibility, accountability, and continuous improvement backed by eviden
- ceDriving measurable improvement in DORA metrics: deploy frequency, lead time, change failure rate, MT
- TRRebuilding engineering culture around ownership and craft — with data as the shared language for performance conversatio
- nsBeing present with engineers — 1:1s, team rituals, unblocking — grounding people leadership in what the data is actually showi
- ngReviewing architecture and contributing to technical direction where needed — enough credibility to be taken serious
- lyWorking with new leadership on engineering strategy, using delivery data to inform roadmap and resourcing decisio
- nsIdentifying structural gaps left by the restructure through data, not just observati

- ionEnough technical foundation to engage credibly on architecture and delivery quality — you don't need to be the best engineer in the room, but you need to be taken seriou
- slyGenuine people instincts — you know how to rebuild trust and ownership in a team that's been through change, and you use data to make those conversations objective rather than perso
